Find Clear and Concise Answers to Common Queries About Our Services and Structured Literacy Approach

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my child assessed for a specific learning disability to access your services?

No, you don’t need an official diagnosis to access our services. We will complete an initial assessment when we first meet your child and determine where we need to start. Each student is assessed using professional assessment tools. The information from these assessments help to identify the gaps in your child’s learning. We then tailor lessons to meet your child’s needs based on a Structured Literacy approach. We do not provide assessments for an official diagnosis. We are able to refer you to the appropriate services for this.

I’ve been told all children learn at different rates – when should I be concerned?

We do not recommend a wait to fail approach. We recommend schools start Structured Literacy as soon as children begin school. If you have concerns about your child’s literacy please feel free to discuss this with us. We work with a range of ages.

What happens during a typical lesson?

Our lessons are explicit, with direct instructions that guide students clearly. We employ a systematic approach, teaching through a specialised scope and sequence that enables students to learn to read and spell words from the beginning. Our methods are multisensory, following the MSL/Orton Gillingham approach, which integrates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile elements. Additionally, our lessons are designed to be fun and engaging, fostering rapport, confidence, and success from the very first session.

What will be expected of my child?

Our sessions are based on your child’s learning and emotional needs. We work hard to build a positive rapport with your child and will work at an appropriate pace for them. We have the luxury of basing our sessions on exactly what your child needs on any given day. We understand their emotional needs and work hard to grow confidence and support children to achieve their goals.

How do you expect parents to be involved?

You are welcome to join your child in their session. We understand for a variety of reasons that this may not be possible and we will ensure you are kept up to date with progress. As we only have a short time with your child each week, it is vital that the homework we give is completed. Our students require lots of review of explicit instruction and doing some of this at home is highly beneficial.
